scene 43

INT. DINING ROOM/KITCHEN - SUNRISE

Quaint and cozy. Window over sink and from table to modest back yard fenced by cedar. Table with two chairs under umbrella. Calendar on the fridge turned to July, with a picture of a flyfisherman casting in a mountain stream. Daisy and Wanda in pajamas and slippers at the table, each with a mug of steaming coffee. Wanda's phone at hand.

WANDA: Feel like doing anything in particular today?

DAISY: Not really. Would you be up for a drive?

WANDA: I would. How 'bout one that includes Elk Mountain and dinner at the hotel?

DAISY: Brilliant.

WANDA: Through Centennial or Medicine Bow?

DAISY: Well, Centennial's prettier but that's some twisty-turny driving.

WANDA: I'm up for it. We'll stop at the corral for coffee, linger along the river before dinner.

DAISY: It's a date.

Both are startled when WANDA'S PHONE RINGS. She picks up, looks at it.

WANDA: Five oh five area code.

DAISY: New Mexico.

Wanda nods, picks up.

WANDA: Hello?

This is Wanda.

Hello, Hunter. Is everything alright?

(Her face expresses the news she is hearing.)

I'm here. Hunter, can I call you in...in fifteen minutes.

Thank you.

(She sets down phone, stares through the window.)

DAISY: Talk to me.

Long pause.

WANDA: Tom died in bed at Hunter's.

Daisy puts her hands on Wanda's, bows her head.

FAINT WESTERN MEADOWLARK SONG.
